From Static Pages to a Living Website

How we modernised a trusted family decorating business by moving them off a hand-coded HTML site and onto a platform they can actually manage.

01
Challenge & Opportunity

PMB Decorators Ltd is a family-run painting and decorating business based in Jersey, Channel Islands, with over 40 years of experience. Paul and his son have built a strong reputation for quality workmanship across residential and commercial projects — interior and exterior, new builds and renovations, paint and wallpaper. The glowing client testimonials spoke for themselves. But their website didn't. The original site was built in flat HTML and CSS with no content management system behind it. Every update required someone to go into the code directly. Adding a new testimonial, updating a service, posting a photo from a recent job — none of it could happen without a developer. For a family business that thrives on word-of-mouth and repeat clients, the inability to keep their digital presence fresh was a real limitation. The opportunity was clear: give PMB Decorators a website that works as hard as they do — one they can own, update, and grow without needing to touch a line of code.

02
Discovery & Research

The original site gave us a useful baseline. The structure was sound — Home, About, Gallery, Services, Contact — and the content, while dated in presentation, told a genuinely compelling story. Decades of experience, trusted premium paint brands like Dulux, Farrow & Ball, and Little Greene, and a stream of heartfelt client testimonials from Jersey homeowners. What was missing was the design and platform to make that story land. We identified two primary audiences: Jersey homeowners looking for a reliable decorator for residential projects, and local businesses or developers seeking a professional team for commercial work. Both groups form opinions quickly online. A flat, static site with placeholder blog posts and outdated formatting was losing trust before Paul ever picked up the phone. The core insight from research was simple: the quality of the work far exceeded the quality of the website. Our job was to close that gap.

03
Design Strategy

The design strategy centred on trust, warmth, and professionalism — the same qualities that define PMB Decorators' reputation on the island. We retained the familiar site structure but rethought the visual hierarchy from the ground up. The hero section led with the business's strongest assets: 40 years of experience, full insurance, and coverage across Jersey. Testimonials were elevated from a tucked-away section to a core part of the experience — real names, real projects, real words from real clients. Service sections were reorganised and written clearly so homeowners could quickly identify what they needed. The premium paint brands — Dulux, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene — were presented as a credibility signal rather than an afterthought. Critically, the entire site was rebuilt on WordPress, replacing the static HTML with a CMS that Paul and his team can manage independently. New gallery images, updated services, fresh testimonials — all manageable without a developer.

Our role

We handled the full transition from static site to managed platform. This included auditing the existing HTML site for all content worth carrying forward, restructuring the information architecture to better serve both residential and commercial audiences, redesigning all pages with a clean and professional visual direction suited to a trusted trades business, rewriting all copy to better reflect the quality and warmth of the PMB brand, migrating and rebuilding the site on WordPress with a simple and intuitive backend, setting up the gallery as an updatable section so new work can be added easily, and ensuring the site was fully responsive across mobile and desktop. We also carried forward the brand's existing identity — logo, colour references, and tone — so the transition felt like an evolution rather than a replacement.

05
Impact

PMB Decorators now has a website that reflects the standard of work they deliver every day. The static HTML site that required a developer to update has been replaced with a platform Paul's team can manage entirely on their own. New jobs can be added to the gallery, testimonials can be updated as they come in, and the site can grow alongside the business without any technical dependency. For a family business built on reputation and referrals, having a professional online presence that backs up a glowing word-of-mouth recommendation is a meaningful upgrade. The site now works as a credibility anchor — the place potential clients land after hearing about PMB from a neighbour or friend, and where the quality of the business is immediately apparent.

06
Reflection

This project was a reminder that not every website challenge is about reinvention. Sometimes the work is about translation — taking what a business already does brilliantly and making sure their digital presence communicates it with the same care. PMB Decorators had the reputation, the experience, and the client relationships. What they needed was a website that finally matched. Moving from hand-coded HTML to a managed CMS is a practical change, but the impact on day-to-day operations is significant. When a business can update its own site, it stays current, it stays credible, and it stays competitive. That independence is what we always aim to leave behind.
